Description

Campbell Lindsay Smith,

Scottish 1879-1915-

Moored boats along a quayside;

oil on canvas board, signed and dated 1907, 23.5x18.8cm

Provenance: Rosebery's, London, 29th March 2017, lot 782

Note: This work is by the Scottish painter Campbell Lindsay Smith, who was a student at the Royal Academy Schools from 1898 to 1903. Smith was killed in battle in 1915, whilst serving for the British army in WWI. He was best known for completing a number of portraits, some of which are currently in the collections of the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums and Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. This particular work exhibits some of the key characteristics which can be seen in other works by the artist, including the free application of paint in muted tones which imbues it with a sense of meditative stillness.
