Description
A Chinese porcelain boy and chicken bowl, 19th century, painted in famille verte enamels with a young boy approaching a cockerel in a rocky landscape filled with flowering peony blossoms issuing from leafy stems, the exterior bearing an inscription of a poem written by the Qianlong emperor, the poem dated to the bingshen year (1776) and followed by two iron-red seal marks reading qian and long, painted underglaze blue artemisia leaf mark within double-ring border to base, 21.5cm diameter
Note: The poem written on this bowl was composed by the Qianlong emperor in 1776. It names the boy as Jia Chang (b.713), a child prodigy that was trained from the age of thirteen to fight cockerels for the Xuanzong emperor (713-56). The boy is depicted as being alert and standing on his tiptoes, which forms the rebus 'qiao zu er dai', which means to expect something to happen soon.
