Lot 80

Description

A Nastaliq panel, signed Muhammad Husayn, known as Zarrin Qalam, Mughal India, mid-17th century, Persian manuscript on paper, three couplets arranged diagonally, a fourth couplet along the left side, signed in the lower left, within a border of trees and animals, panel 21.7 x 10.5cm.

The couplets appear to be by the poet Amir Shahi of Sabzavar (d. 1453 AD). Honoured with the title Zarrinqalam (gold pen), Muhammad Husain Kashmiri was one of the acclaimed calligraphers of the court of Akbar Shah in late16th and early 17th century.

He was a master of Nastaliq and a pupil of Abd al-Aziz. Abul fazl Alami in Ain-i Akbari considers his handwriting to be equal to that of Mir Ali. He died in A.H.1020/A.D 1611-12 six years after Akbar Shahs death.

Further calligraphic works by Zarrin Qalam are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1993.380); the British Museum (OA 0.341, 1813,1218,0.4); The British Library (OR12988).
