Lot 152

Description

A Mamluk marvered manganese glass bird, Egypt or Syria, 10th-12th century, with wings folded behind and tail slightly raised, decorated to the body with striped white bands, later foot, 7.2cm. long x 6.5cm. high

This glass bird is part of a small group of approximately twenty such ornaments produced in early Islamic times. Carboni proposes several different purposes for this group that vary one from another in small details. Those that are sealed and contain a glass rod, wind chimes; those that are sealed and empty with a minute opening in the tail, perfume bottles; and those, such as the present bird, he suggests were used as children's toys (Carboni 2001, cat.79, p.302-303).

Related birds can be found in the al-Sabah collection as mentioned above, the Billups Collection (Corning 1962, no.28), the Art Museum in Kiev (Lamm 1929-30, p.32:9), the Benaki Museum (Clairmont 1977, nos.520-3), and the Ashmolean Museum (Allan 1995, fig.10a) amongst others.
