Description

Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 1505 AD): A Quran commentary (tafsir), signed Umm Ali bin Maj[..], Central Asia, dated Sunday 13 Rajab AH 1314/18 December 1896 AD, Arabic manuscript on paper, 17ll. of neat black naskh per page with notes above and below and important words and phrases underlined in red, lacking binding, 34.7 x 22.5cm.

It is of particular significance that this manuscript is signed by a female scribe called Umm Ali . The notions of privacy and modesty in the Islamic world gave only limited access to women working in various areas including women calligraphers. Biographical information about these calligraphers is limited and in many cases comes from their tombstones and gives information about their family structure, networks of interest, education and the teachers from whom they received instruction.

For further reading see Female Calligraphers: Past & Present, by Hilal Kazan. Traditional Arts Series no. VI, Istanbul: Cultural Co., 2010
