Description

David Bomberg,
British 1890-1957-

Stairs, (the Theatre Trap Door), 1919;

ink and wash, signed and dated, 20x27cm (ARR)

Provenance: Boundary Gallery, London; Private collection, London

Note: David Bomberg was a British painter and member of the Whitechapel Boys. He studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks alongside artists such as Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson, and Paul Nash. However, his unconventional style eventually led to his expulsion from the Slade in 1913, following which he travelled to France and met artists including Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. Bomberg later taught at Borough Polytechnic in London, where his pupils included Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach.

Bombergs work has been included in a number of exhibitions, most notably in a high-profile retrospective held at the Tate Britain in 1987. More recently, in 2019-2020, some of Bombergs early works were the subject of an exhibition at the National Gallery in London, where they were displayed alongside artworks by Old Masters, such as Botticelli and Michelangelo, which had inspired him. The representation of bold, geometric shapes which characterised these works are also clearly evident in these pieces, making them impressive examples of Bombergs early, career-defining style.

His works are currently held at MoMA in New York, the Art Institute in Chicago, the Tate in London and National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh
