Description
Wilfrid Gabriel de Glehn RP RA,
British 1870-1951-
Leda and the Swan;
oil on panel, 21.5 x 17.5cm (ARR)
Provenance: Studio collection; Bonhams, 28 November 1996 lot 18; David Messum, London, where purchased in September 2001 by the current owner's father.
Note: Wilfrid Gabriel de Glehn was a British painter and a member of the Royal Academy. He studied at the École de Beaux Arts in Paris, and was taught by eminent artists including Gustave Moreau and Jules-Élie Delaunay. His painting style can be compared to that of his close friend, John Singer Sargent, whom De Glehn regularly accompanied on painting trips. The viewer can see the key characteristics of De Glehn's artistry in this study, which reflects De Glehns preoccupation with the female form, the classical influence on his work, and his interest in the contrasting depicting of light and shadow.
