Lot 33

Description

Adrian Heath,

British 1920-1992-

Dirdal 2, 1990;

oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse, 101.5 x 76.2cm, (ARR)

Provenance: with Austin/Desmond Fine Art; with Redfern Gallery, according to the labels attached to the reverse of the frame.

Note: Adrian Heath was a leading abstract artist in twentieth-century Britain. He was taught by Stanhope Forbes whilst studying art at Newlyn in 1938, and later attended the Slade School of Art. As a prisoner of war throughout much of WWII he met and befriended the famous abstract artist Terry Frost, whom he taught to paint. Heath was a major point of connection between the St Ives School (he met artists including Ben Nicholson in the 1950s) and the movement of British Constructivism, through which he was associated with contemporaries such as Anthony Hill and Victor Pasmore. Heaths work has been included in exhibitions held by the Royal Academy, the British Council, and the Tate St Ives, and is in a number of permanent collections, including that of Newnham College, Cambridge, and the Arts Council Collection.
