Lot 162

Richard Smith CBE,

British 1931-2016-

oil on board in two parts, signed and dated 58, inscribed verso with artist's name and address and 'Art Galler [sic] Portland Building University Park Nottingham', 125x184cm (ARR)

Provenance: the artist; collection of the architect Margaret Dent (Mrs Stephen); thence by descent

Exhibited: Arts Council of Great Britain, Cambridge, Newcastle and London, 'Abstract Impressionism', 1958, cat. no. 25 (in one piece; this work was cut into two parts at a later date, presumably by the artist)

Note: Born in Hertfordshire in 1931, Richard Smith studied at the Royal College of Art, London from 1954-57. His work was included in the 1958 exhibition 'Abstract Impressionism' organised by Lawrence Alloway and Harold Cohen with the goal of bringing together artists from England, France, and the United States whose work represented both abstraction and a painterly interest in colour, touch, light and space. The following year, Smith received the Harkness Fellowship to travel to New York where he began to explore elements of both Abstract Expressionism and Pop art in his own work.
