Description
A seated portrait of Shah 'Abbasi, Qajar Iran, dated 1228AH/1813-14AD, oil on canvas, the ruler attended by a prince identified as 'Suley[man] in a lobed medallion with date and identification inscription, stretched and framed, 149.4 x 117.4cm.
Inscriptions: In the lobed medallion: Shah Abbas jannat makan, 1228, 'Shah Abbas, whose place is in paradise, 1228AH/1813/14AD' by the young prince: Suley[man Mirza]
This early Qajar oil was painted during the reign of Fath 'Ali Shah (r.1797-1834), who was a keen patron of life size oil portraits of himself and his sons. The choice of sitter in the present painting is unusual for this period. The main figure depicted is one of Iran's greatest Safavid rulers, Shah 'Abbas I (r. 1 October 1588-19 January 1629) who is often recognised by his distinctive moustache. He is accompanied by a young prince at his side who is identified as Suleyman [Mirza], killed August 1632.
