Description

Andre Derain,

French 1880-1954-

Portrait de Femme (Portrait of a Woman), c. 1922;

oil on board, signed, 23.3 x 18cm (ARR)

Provenance: Private collection, London

Literature: Michel Kellermann, 'Andre Derain, Catalogue Raisonne de l'Oeuvre Peint Tome 2 1915-1934,' no.1109 p.205 (the work is listed as oil on canvas)

Note: André Derain is best known for his contribution to the Fauvist movement. In 1905, with a group of artists including Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), Derain exhibited at the Salon dAutomne, Paris, where the critic Louis Vauxcelles used the wordfauves(wild beasts), the movement later being called Fauvism.

Derains oeuvre marries the volumes of Paul Cezannes (1839-1906) flatness with known non-Western sculpture, which is evident in this portrait. The portrait is likely Derains wife, Alice, as the sitters features appear to be similar to those of Derains other portraits of Alice, for example 'Madame Derain in Green', 1907 held in MoMAs collection.

With thanks to Robert Stoppenbach, a member of the comite Derain, for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
