Lot 470

Description

A longcase clock by Charles Clay, 18th century, the hood with turned ball and gourd form finials to the arched top, with arched glazed door flanked by fluted canted corners, with opaque glazed side panels, the trunk with arched door on plinth base, the arched dial with silvered Roman and Arabic numeral chapter ring with seconds subsidiary dial and date aperture, with pierced black steel hands, surrounded by pierced brass spandrels, the circular name plaque above Charles Clay Inventor of the Machine Watches London flanked by dolphin spandrels, with pendulum, two weights, and winder, 217cm high

Note: Charles Clay was famed for his production of mechanical music clocks. In the reign of George I Clay, a Yorkshire man from Stockton applied to Parliament for a patent on a musical and repeating clock or watch, which was refused after a protracted legal battle with Thomas Tompion, who was also developing mechanical clocks.

In 1736 he is recorded in the Weekly Advertiser as exhibiting a musical clock to the King and was referred to in this publication as 'Mr Clay, inventor of the machine watches'.

He was famed for working with the composer Handal. His work appears in museums in Beijing and Naples.
