Lot 141

Description

Richard Eurich OBE RA,

British 1903-1992-

Whitby Harbour (Study for the Mural in the Teaching Hospital, Sheffield);

oil on board, signed and inscribed verso, 69x101cm (ARR)

Exhibited: Ash Barn Gallery, Petersfield, 1980 (no. 3); The Fine Art Society, London 1991 (no. 5)

Note: The present work is a study for Richard Eurichs first mural commission for the Teaching Hospital, Sheffield (the Royal Hallamshire Hospital). Although highly finished, this study bears notations, squaring, and a few stray pencil marks. His daughter, Caroline, who was an art student at the time, remembers assisting her father in squaring this work for transfer.

Eurich had a special fondness for Whitby, which appeared more than once in his works. He has here taken an unusual high vantage point over the town and harbour and flattened the picture plane in a similar way to his earlier painting Gay Lane. This work is to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.

We are grateful to Philippa Bambach and Caroline Martin for their assistance in cataloguing this work.
