Description
An Italian ivory and coral figure of St. Sebastian, 18th century, modelled tied to a tree, on a square socle with canted corners, 13cm high
Note: Saint Sebastian was an early Christian martyr who was killed during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. He is commonly depicted tied to a tree with soldiers shooting cross bow bolts or arrows at him, as seen in the painting by Piero del Pollaiolo The martyrdom of Saint Sebastian in the National Gallery, London. It is often believed that he did not survive this experience but according to legend he was left for dead and rescued by Irene of Rome. Surviving his injuries he want to Diocletian to renounce his persecution of the Christians and was clubbed to death and his body thrown into Romes sewer.
