Description
After John William Waterhouse RA RI, British 1849-1917- "The Magic Circle"; oil on canvas, bears signature, 92x61cm
Note: The present work is a late 19th century copy of Waterhouse's 'The Magic Circle' (1886), which is in the collection of the Tate (N01572). Magic, miracles and the power of prophecy are common themes in Waterhouse's art- and the notion of woman as enchantress is one that is also seen in 'Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysees' (1891) and 'Hylas and the Nymphs' (1896).
'The Magic Circle' was included in the 1886 show at the Royal Academy. In this particular year, the Royal Academy, according to the Magazine of Art, was 'at its worst. It has reached its nadir.' However, 'Mr Waterhouse, in The Magic Circle, is still at his best- original in conception and pictorial in his results. - The purchase (by the Chantrey Bequest for £650)... will cause general satisfaction.' (see Anthony Hobson, J W Waterhouse, London, 1989/1992, pp.37-38)
