Description
Lots 921-932 are by the Austrian artist Ernst Eisenmayer and come from the family of the artist.
Forced into exile from Nazi occupied Austria at the age of eighteen, Eisenmayer was granted admission to Britain in April 1939 to take up a trainee post in an ironworks in Oxford. With the British retreat from Dunkirk in 1940 and the fear of a German fifth column in Britain, Eisenmayer was interned on 25 June as an enemy alien. Released on 7 August 1941, Eisenmayer moved to London and later studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in 1947, where his teachers included Victor Pasmore.
Eisenmayer has exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, London, Marjorie Parr Gallery, London, La Boetie Gallery, New York and Sculptors Collective, Amsterdam. Solo exhibitions include: the Ben Uri Gallery, London (1962), Sheldon Swope Museum and Gallery, Indiana (1968) and Bezirksmuseum Alsergrund, Vienna (1993). His painting "Strip Poker" closed Ben Uri's 2010 exhibition Forced Journeys which toured to Douglas and Birkenhead to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Manx internment camps. His work has recently undergone a critical reassessment and in 2012 the Austrian Cultural Forum organised the significant exhibition "Ernst Eisenmayer: Art Beyond Exile", which also travelled to The Sayle Gallery, Douglas, Isle of Man.
