Description

A cheetah after the original by Shaykh Zayn al-Din (1753-1826) , Company School, India, 19th century, watercolour on paper, mounted glazed and framed, 24 x 31cm.

This painting is from a tradition of watercolour studies depicting natural history subjects and was likely painted in Calcutta where natural history drawings were popular during the late 18th and early 19th century. These works are of a superior quality to paintings produced for the general consumer and were vital to botanists in India and in England in helping further the study of the fauna and flora of the Indian subcontinent.

Shaykh Zayn al-Din is most famously known for being in the employment of Sir Elijah and Lady Mary Impey. Sir Impey was the Chief Justice of Bengal from 1774-1782. Like many of the English who worked in India in the 18th century, they were both keenly interested in the exotic. Lady Impey kept a private zoo on her estate and employed three painters trained in the naturalistic Mughal tradition. This drawing is a faithful 19th century rendition of a masterpiece from the resulting Impey collection of Anglo-Indian natural history watercolors. Drawings from that collection are widely regarded as the finest of their kind, and upon being brought back to England in 1783 they were reproduced by many of the most important naturalists of that day, and of subsequent generations. For the original painting see Stuart Cary Welch, Room for Wonder, Plate 9, page 41.
