Description

A rare James I silver wine taster, London 1613, maker's mark WR, the plain circular bowl with applied cast scallop shell thumb-piece handle, approx 8cm diameter x 3cm high, approx 2.7oz.

Note: This wine taster pre-dates the acknowledged earliest English example (1631) that is held in the Jackson Collection at the National Museum of Wales.

The maker's mark on this wine taster appears to be the one recorded by Sir Charles James Jackson in his pioneering work English Goldsmiths' and Their Marks, 1st Edition, London, 1905, page 114, line 1 described as taken from a wine taster: Messrs Christie. (2nd Edition, 1921, page 112, mark 22, Antique Collectors' Club Edition, 1989, page 108, mark 22).
