Note: Included with this copy and mounted therein are a letter signed by Dali, a post card from Dali to the publisher Albert Skira, an invitation to a private view of an exhibition of Salvador Dali at The Zwemmer Gallery, Wednesday October 24, 1934 and a further private view invitation to the exhibition of Drawings and Etchings to Illustrate Lautremont's Chants de Maldoror by Dali, at The Julien Levy Gallery, New York. There are three Ex Libris in this book, Julien Bogousslavsky, Henri Paricaud and Serge Goldenberg.
Dali was originally commissioned by the publisher Skira in 1934 to produce forty-four heliogravures reworked in drypoint to illustrate Lautreamont's 1868 Chants de Maldoror text. When published the book contained 42 etchings and due to financial difficulties, Skira only printed 100 copies. This rare example includes the two etchings originally intended to be included with the book but were dropped at a later date. These two etchings are part of the 44 plates en suite included with this example, the total number of plates and vignettes being eighty-six.
