The sale features two single owner collections of French and Japanese studio ceramics respectively. Lot 1: Angelo Mangiarotti (1921-2012) for Agape Casa ‘Eros’ dining table, originally designed 1971, circa 2020.

Lot 1 opens the sale with a large and impressive ‘Eros’ dining table designed by Angelo Mangiarotti. Originally conceived in 1971, the ‘Eros’ range has been in production ever since and is already considered to be a Design classic. This example was produced by licensed manufacturer’s Agapecasa and is crafted from five pieces of grey carnico marble, that slot together with no need for screws or fixings. This statement piece comes to auction with a pre-sale estimate of £4,000-6,000.

Lot 4: Joaquim Tenreiro (1906-1992): Six 'Cadeira Curva' chairs, circa 1960

Lot 4 is a set of six stunning 1960s ‘Curva’ chairs by Portuguese born Brazilian designer Joaquim Tenreiro. Finely constructed in Brazilian rosewood with rattan seats, these chairs epitomise the simplicity and style of Brazilian mid-century Modernism. Tenreiro’s designs, along with the work of contemporaries such as Oscar Niemeyer, Sergio Rodrigues and Jose Zanine Caldas, are now prized highly by discerning collectors, with the market going from strength to strength. This lot comes to auction with a pre-sale estimate of £7,000-10,000.

A selection of French studio ceramics

Lots 28-44 form an impressive private collection of French mid-century studio ceramics, including works by Georges Jouve, Pol Chambost, Robert and Jean Cloutier, Peter & Denise Orlando and Gilbert Portanier. Purchased in the early 2000s, a collection of French ceramics like this rarely comes up for auction this side of the channel. Highlights from the collection are lot 28, a large ‘Taureau a visage humain’ sculpture by Jean & Robert Cloutier, Lot 30, a ‘Cylindre’ vase by Georges Jouve, and lot 33, a model 1056 vase by Pol Chambost.

This rare, limited edition work effortlessly combines a British Arts and Crafts aesthetic with Garouste & Bonetti’s signature flamboyance. With one owner from new, this lot comes to auction with a pre-sale estimate of £4,000-6,000.

Lot 86: Ken Mihara (b.1958) Vase, 2008, Stoneware with dry grey body

Lots 86-98 form an outstanding collection of modern and contemporary Japanese studio ceramics. Purchased in the 2000s, particular highlights include lot 86, a large stoneware vase by Ken Mihara, exhibited at the artist’s Japan Ceramic Society Award exhibition in 2008, lot 90, a striated, sand-glazed vessel entitled ‘Chōtō: Listening to the Waves’, created by Sakiyama Takayuki in 2011 and a selection of guinomi by Ken Mihara, Kazu Yamada and Koie Ryoji.

Lot 77: Gillian Ayres CBE RA (1930-2018), Rare early pitcher, circa 1947

Lot 77 is a rare and early pitcher by celebrated British abstract painter Gillian Ayres CBE RA. Made during the artist’s early years at Camberwell School of Art, this delightful pot features impressive freehand decoration over beige glaze. The aesthetic qualities of the pot can be likened to styles prevalent in the work of important Camberwell potters such as William Staite Murray and Henry Hammond, as well as Ayres’ own paintings. The pitcher was gifted to a friend of Ayres’ at Camberwell, and subsequently owned by descent.
