For Roseberys, summer is a traditionally busy period and this year is no exception. With four auctions spanning over jewellery, furniture, works of art and art; Wednesday 18 July holds the Pictures 1500-1900 sale.
The sale features fine paintings, drawings and prints, laced in tradition from the classical Old Master, Mannerists and Baroque through to Early British, Victorian and Traditionalist artist’s active between the periods of 1500-1900.

Lot 67
Henry Walton, British 1746-1813- A Girl Seated at the Stile; oil on canvas, oval, bears inscribed label.
Provenance with Bowyer Nicholls, Lawford Hall, Essex; thence by descent to his grandson; Sotheby’s, London, 27th April 2016 lot 902.
Evelyne Bell, an authority on Henry Walton, confirmed the authenticity of this piece when it sold at Sotheby’s London on 27th April 2016.
Walton studied at St Martin’s Lane Academy in London; the precursor to the Royal Academy. He primarily worked as a portraitist and miniaturist, painting in oil. Among his most celebrated sitters were Edward Gibbon, the Revd William Gilpin, Horatio Walpole, first earl of Orford, and Lord Cornwallis.
This painting was a celebrated picture by Walton, so much so that in the early nineteenth century a copy of the piece was commissioned.
Marcus Grey commented ‘I believe this to be one of the best Walton’s available on the market at the moment’.

Lot 97
Edward Calvert, British 1799-1883- The Dryads; oil on paper, unframed.
Provenance with Mrs J Richmond according to the label attached to the reverse of the back board.
Calvert’s early visions, such as this painting, were greatly inspired by William Blake, and he became a member of the Blake- influenced group known as ‘The Ancients’.
This pieces is most likely the preliminary work for Calvert’s ‘The Dryads’ which can be found in the British Museum (No.1890.0415.409).

Lot 185
François Nicolas Augustin Feyen-Perrin, French 1826-1888- Remords; oil on canvas, signed and dated 1885.
Provenance with Christie’s, London, 23rd March, 2005, lot 156, entitled Nue allongée This piece was exhibited at the Salon of 1885, Goupil & Cie, Paris, Ludovic Baschet Editeur, p. 32, entitled Nue allongée.

Lot 279
William Stott of Oldham, British 1857-1900- Sparkling Sea; pastel, signed. Provenance with Chas A Jackson, Art Dealer, 1 Police Street, Manchester, according to label attached to the reverse of the frame Exhibited: William Stott of Oldham 1857-1900, A Comet Rushing to the Sun, Roger Brown, Gallery Oldham, 6 December 2003-24 April 2004.
Last year Tate purchased the artist’s ‘The Ferryman’ to hang on permanent display at Tate Britain.
This work is a wonderful example of the British Impressionist beach scenes.

Exhibited: Royal Academy, London 1904, item 106; Walker Galleries, Liverpool, 1923 Note: Portrait of Sir John Martin Harvey, as Sydney Carton in ‘The Only Way” an adaption of “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens 1812-1870 The character of Sydney Carton, was one of Harvey’s most renowned characters, there were several artists commissioned to create portraits of the actor as Carton at the time, including George Frampton, RA, who created a bust of the artist.
