Man Ray Steals the Day
24 November 2017
Auction round-up from 18 November Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples
The Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples auction took place on Saturday 18 November, to a packed sale room, multiple internet platforms and telephone bidders, making this the most successful print sale for the auction house to date.
Roseberys Print specialist Nicola Allan observed “an exciting atmosphere in the saleroom on the day with bidders traveling from far to be there for the sale. It was also incredible to see the global reach of the sale with bidders registered from South American to Japan”.
Highlights from the sale include (lot 120) “Mr. and Mrs. Woodman” by Man Ray which sold for a record breaking price of £11070
A worthy price for this elegant publication which displays the rigor of the artist’s imagination in the mediums of photography, engraving, word and use of the found object bound into one.
Enthusiasm for Terry Frost prints was at an all time high with a record breaking price for the artist’s screenprint ‘Orange, Green and Blue Rhythms’ (lot 209) which realised a final sale price of £1720 near to doubling its previous record.
(Lot 176) A rare signed lithograph by Le Corbusier entitled ‘Modulor’ commanded strong bidding online and in the room achieving £3320 in the auction. Hockney’s “Portrait of Felix Mann” (lot 130) sold for £2090 more than twice the amount achieved by a London room earlier this year.
Additional highlights in the sale included some of the greatest names in British printmaking including (lot 84) St. Ives artists Ben Nicholson’s “Still Life” from 1962; a lithograph printed in colours on Arches, stamped in blue ink and signed in blue ballpoint pen, reached a final price of £4180
Barbara Hepworth, Patrick Heron, as well as groupings of editions by John Piper CH, L.S. Lowry, the late Sir Howard Hodgkin CH CBE and David Hockney OM CH RA, all saw exceptional prices.
Highlights by leading international contemporary artists including an unusual glow in the dark example by Chris Ofili CBE, (lot 274) went to a happy buyer in America for £1785.
Further lots by Robert Indiana, Banksy, KAWS, Anish Kapoor CBE RA, Sir Antony Gormley OBE, Shepard Fairey, Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter led strong sales in the international contemporary section.
