Most notable is the oil painting by Leon Gaspard, titled Village church in early spring, 1911, with an estimate of £8,000-12,000. This refined pencil and oil on canvas board, was acquired by the grandfather of the present owner prior to 1978. This artwork is a classic piece by the artist demonstrating the artist’s interest in depicting the dress and customs of traditional rural Russian communities. Like many of his works, this piece uses bright colours to create a sense of the vitality and innocence of its subjects, against the extremes of their environment. His work combines influences from various artistic movements, with echoes of Impressionism, and from the countries he visited on his extensive travels.
Another rare piece is by the female Russian artist Natalie Gontcharova, Russian 1881-1962- Abstract composition, circa 1950. This work is part of a series which deals with the concept of space and the cosmos, and was influenced by the launch of Sputnik and the development of the Space Race between the USSR and the USA in the 1950s. Gontcharova was interested not only in the mechanics of space exploration, but also in the consideration of the separation between the material and the spiritual which the idea of space encouraged. Russian expert James Butterwick has kindly assisted Roseberys with the cataloguing of this piece. This work has been estimated to make £4000-6000 at auction.
Another highlight is the collection of works on paper from a private collection. Including in this collection are Luciskins, Mavirina, Massokovsky, Ryndin and Meer Alexrod. Most notable is the Meer Alelrod Illustration for Sholom-Aleykhem (1859-1916) titled The Enchanted Tailor, 1947, estimated to make £400-600.
