Roseberys Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples auction this October offers a comprehensive catalogue of international artists.
From the comical typography screen prints of American artist Mel Bochner to animal themed linocuts of British artist Edward Bawden CBE RA.

Here we look at a section of auction highlights from newly appointed Head of Department Shane Xu.
Representing British printmaking is Edward Bawden CBE RA (1903-1989) Aesop’s Fables: Hares, Foxes & Eagles, 1970; linocut in colours on wove, signed, titled, inscribed Artist’s Proof, and numbered 1/50 in pencil, 52.5×68.5cm (ARR)
More than thirty years after his death, Bawdens work is still going strong. Celebrated as a young and exciting artists at the beginning of his career and recently the subject of a retrospective at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, his witty imagery is still as relevant today as it was originally.
A prolific artist, he was known to rarely take a day off; producing many prints of animals and creatures in his instantly recognisable style.
Continuing with British printmaking we move to the abstract formations of Victor Pasmore CH CBE. Pasmore’s work is presented in 11 lots (50-60), prints dating from 1972 up to 1992. Passmore was an artist and architect and is attributed with the development of abstract art in Britain through the 1940s and 1950s. Having a strong presence in the education system and lecturing for most of his career, his students included Sir Terry Frost; the handover of abstraction is clear to see in their works.

This is from a series of works by nineteen artists paying tribute to John Constable. The portfolio ‘For John Constable’ was commissioned by Bernard Jacobson on the occasion of the bicentenary of Constable’s birth in 1976. The series was exhibited at the Tate Gallery the same year.
Finally the darling of the art world, and recent curator of the RA Summer Exhibition – Grayson Perry.

Over to the American Heavyweights; works representing the USA include Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt and KAWS.
Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait of Marilyn Munroe is known all over the world over, and lot 229 is a great moment in pop art history.

Sol Le Witt, first came to fame in the late 1960s. A founder of minimal and conceptual art – LeWitt is known for his bold 2D work and ‘structures’ (sculptures) He has been the focus of hundreds of solo exhibition world-wide and his contemporaries include rank Stella, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.

Finally Mel Bochner, (b.1940) a recognised leader in the development of conceptual art, Bochner was part of a movement in the 1960s and 70s that looked to break away from outmoded forms of art and develop a new generation of artists that at the time included Eva Hesse, Donald Judd and Robert Smithson.
