Thursday 15 February – Tuesday 6 March
Roseberys London’s tri-annual online only sale of Modern & Contemporary art is aimed at the new generation of collectors looking to invest in art, the sale features paintings, prints and sculpture by established and emerging artists.
Madge Gill, British 1882-1961- Past-portrait man at wheel- Veri; brush and black ink on postcard, titled on the reverse, 9×13.8cm: together with one other brush and black ink by the same artist, Ponsice du Van
Highlights from the sale include a collection of Madge Gill postcards. Gill, an outsider artist with a modest career spanning over 40 years, was guided to produce her work by a spirit named ‘myinnerrest’ (my inner rest). Gill never sold any of her works during her lifetime but, exhibited a number of times at the Whitechapel Gallery, after her death in 1961 thousands of works were discovered in her home and since then, like many outsider artists her work has gained recognition and a strong following. Her works are held in international collections including The Whitechapel Gallery, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Collection de l’Art Brut in Switzerland.
Included in the collection on offer is a very rare gouache pair of postcards – rare because the majority of her works of female portraits and abstract patterns were only in pen and ink however, these have been finished in gouache
Also included in this sale is a collection of pieces by the urban artists Burning Candy Crew members; Sweet Toof, James Jessop, Cyclops, Harry Pye as well as their contemporaries James Howard, Sam Dargan and Gavin Nolan.
Sweet Toof is a renowned British Artist known for both his solo and collaborative pieces.
Sweet Toof, British b.1972- Toof Rok (Mellow Yellow), 2008; acrylic and gloss on plywood crate
Another highlight are pieces from the collection of Andrew Leigh, the son of Marion Leigh. Marion was the former documentary film executive in Canada and London (1942-1650) and life partner of A.J. (“Con”) Leventhal. Both were friends of the avant-garde artist Samuel Beckett and members of his artistic circle in Paris in the late 50s, these works are from the private collection of this period.
Stanley William Hayter, British 1901-1988- Araignée, 1967; lithograph printed in colours, signed, titled, dated and numbered 2/50
For new collectors with an interest in the contemporary Indian market, there is selection of prints by Sayed Haider Raza and Maqbool Fida Husain, both revolutionary figures in Indian Post War art.
Award winning Indian artist Raza, worked in France since the 1950 but, continued to hold strong ties with India and is known for his strong, colourful and vivid abstract paintings charged with icons from Indian cosmology and philosophy. Following the death of his French artist wife, Janine Mongillat in 2010, Raza returned to his homeland where he died six years later at the age of 94.
