Saturday 14 May saw the Roseberys London salerooms light up with excitement for an array of rare and unusual Vintage Fashion & Antique Textiles.
The star Lot being a plastic moulded breastplate by world acclaimed Japanese designer Issey Miyake.
Over his 40 year career, Miyake successfully united East and West fashion creating unstructured designs, incorporating industrial materials such as wire and plastic and bringing his now famous ‘Pleats Please’ to the runways.
The breastplates were showcased at the finale of his 1980 A/W collection in Paris and started the body-con movement in fashion that defined the era.
Rare Issey Miyake bronzed coloured
Loved by the stars of the time, the breastplate was most notably modelled by Grace Jones, who was photographed in three different versions; the common red, the metallic blue and the rare bronze.
This rare plastic bodice was purchased by the owner’s sister in Santa Fe California when new in 1980/81 She was advised by the shop assistant to choose the bronze colourway as very few had been produced. This proved to be good advice as the bodice was hotly contested and finally sold to a Californian buyer for £13650. Only the red versions of this bodice have appeared at public auction in the past.
Prices include Buyers Premium of 23%.
