Head of Department: Modern Design & Decorative Arts

 

Overview:

To lead the development and growth of the Modern Design & Decorative Arts department; working within the department and with the general valuations team to drive sales, whilst engaging new and existing buyers and consignors to Roseberys.

Responsibilities

  • Securing consignments to increase turnover and income for the department and selling sales for the Modern Design & Decorative Arts Department. Sourcing new business through pro-active target marketing, cold calling, relationship making and building and maintaining existing client relationships.
  • Actively manage client relationships in order to enhance client loyalty and generate business; support key client activity in particular focusing on generating new networks of clients/collectors to Roseberys
  • Prepare and deliver valuation proposals to secure consignments, providing valuations both offsite and within the auction house
  • Research and write catalogue entries
  • Lead the catalogue production process and adhere to strict production deadlines
  • Lead the exhibition set up. Actively participate in all presale exhibitions and events, to cultivate bidders, promote and sell the sale. Develop, track and communicate client interest in lots; and execute bids at sale.
  • Undertake condition reports for both Modern Design and Decorative arts items
  • Viewing responsibilities helping clients at the exhibition; speaking to clients about the property
  • Perform valuations for auction and probate in association with the Professional Services Department
  • Mentor the junior members of the department, providing support and guidance on matters related to expertise and client relationships

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum 7 years relevant experience within the field of Modern Design & Decorative Arts, auction house experience preferred but not essential
  • General knowledge about a broad range of values within the discipline ranging from £200-£200,000
  • Proven track record at generating business from both private and trade sources and increasing turnover within similar field
  • Ability to maintain composure in a stressful environment and meet deadlines
  • Driven with a positive and can-do attitude
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Asian Art Specialist

 

Roseberys are seeking an experienced, well-rounded, knowledgeable, passion and pro-active specialist to join our growing Asian department. This is a full-time role and an exciting opportunity to join a successful and well-established department within the auction house.

 

The job role is as follows:

To take a leading role in the development and formation of the bi-annual Chinese, Japanese & South East Asian Art auctions; working closely with the head of department to drive the sales whilst engaging new and existing buyers and consignors to Roseberys.

 

Responsibilities

Business Getting

  • Responsible for securing consignments and nurturing clients and buyers for the Asian Art department
  • Actively manage client relationships in order to enhance client loyalty and generate business; support key client activity in particular focusing on generating new networks of clients/collectors to Roseberys
  • Active participation with the Asian Art community – attendance at social and art world events e.g. gallery and museum openings; increasing the network of contacts and relationships within this market
  • Prepare and deliver valuation proposals to secure consignments, providing valuations both offsite and within the auction house

 

Cataloguing & Auctions

  • Research and write catalogue entries
  • Translating entries and notes
  • Assist with the catalogue production process and adhere to strict production deadlines
  • Assist with viewing set up. Actively participate in all presale exhibitions and events, to cultivate bidders, promote and sell the sale. Develop, track and communicate client interest in lots; and execute bids at sale
  • Assist with condition reports

Marketing

  • Co-ordinate with the marketing department for aspects of pre and post-sale communication and develop Roseberys’ Asian Art social media channels

Mentorship

  • Manage the departmental internship programme
  • Mentor the junior members of the department, providing support and guidance on matters related to expertise and client relationships

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years experience within the field
  • Established track record of generating new business within the Asian art market
  • Proven network of contacts and ability to form new business relationships
  • Up to date market knowledge
  • Experience and knowledge of Chinese advertising pathways 
  • Fluent in Mandarin 
  • Auction house experience preferred but not essential
  • Previous experience of mentoring junior staff or interns

Furniture Department Valuer & Cataloguer

Roseberys are seeking a diligent, enthusiastic and passionate person to join our furniture department as a valuer and cataloguer. This is a full-time position and based predominantly in-house within the auction rooms.

Overview & Responsibilities

To catalogue and manage the furniture sections of the Traditional & Modern Home auctions and the tri-annual Fine & Decorative auctions, to provide in house valuations to clients in person and by email, and to oversee the management and organisation of the furniture within the saleroom.  

Main responsibilities include:

Cataloguing & Valuing

  • Cataloguing furniture lots
  • Undertaking valuations in the auction house and by email
  • Writing catalogue notes
  • Conducting condition reports
  • Managing the photography for the furniture sections of auctions
  • Adhering to deadlines
  • Proof reading
  • Curating the order of the auction

Saleroom Duties and Management

  • Liaising with clients regarding pre and post-sale enquiries
  • Co-ordinating collection of furniture with buyers post sale
  • Daily manual handling of heavy furniture
  • Receiving and managing incoming deliveries including checking off against contracts
  • Managing the logistics of inhouse and offsite furniture storage areas to ensure smooth stock rotation and careful handling of goods
  • Assisting to prepare the auction room for viewings and ensure lotting up is completed on time
  • Helping to set the auction room up for sales
  • Managing re-entries of unsold lots
  • Internet clerking for auctions

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree desirable but not essential
  • Minimum 3 years experience within an auction house with a good understanding of the auction process
  • Previous furniture cataloguing and valuation experience
  • Experience in manual handling of heavy furniture
  • Ability to maintain composure in a stressful environment and meet deadlines
  • Driven with a positive and can-do attitude
