Lot 61
Description
A Rasulid Qur'an folio,
Yemen, first half 14th century
Surah al-Anfal (الاٴنفَال) v.67 (part) to v.74 (part) to recto, v. 74 (part)-v.75 followed by Surah al-Tawba (التّوبَة) v.1 to 5 (part) to verso, Arabic on paper, the surah heading in white pseudo kufic script outlined in gold against blue, flanked by square panels filled with lattice, within rectangular cartouche, large marginal gold medallions outlined in black and crenulated in blue for text subdivision, each containing a leaved palmette,
60.5 x 52.5cm. framed
Provenance: Private London collection since the 1980s
Although a Mamluk Egyptian origin cannot be completely discounted, David James suggests that the distinctive layout, as well as the use of a variety of scripts which include muhaqqaq, thuluth and naskh, indicate that folios from this Qur’an were produced outside the area under direct control of the Mamluk Sultans. He suggests that it might have been copied under Rasulid patronage in Yemen (1229-1454). Other folios from the manuscript are in the Khalili Collection (inv. QUR 850, J. M. Rogers, The Arts of Islam: Treasures from the Nasser D Khalili Collection, Abu Dhabi, 2007, no.165, p.143), the Lygo Collection (Will Kwiatowski, Pages of the Qur’an, the Lygo Collection, London, n.d., pp.100-101, no.58) and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (https://islamic-arts.org/2012/the-qur%E2%80%99an/). Four folios from the same Qur'an sold at Christies 27 April 2017 Lot 11.
