Lot 203

Description

TO BE SOLD WITH NO RESERVE

Maharaja Duleep Singh seated on a chair holding a gun,
North India, 20th century,

From an original painting by Hassan al-Din and kept at the British Library (add Or. 710), on a terrace, a white dog at his feel, his army commander in chief and Labh Singh and subordinate Tej Singh kneeling at his side, his fly whisk bearer standing behind him, wide red borders ruled in black, narrow plain cream margins, the reverse plain

22 x 25.2cm.

A version of this painting sold at Bonhams, 15 April , lot 405. As noted by Bonhams, Labh Singh and Tej Singh, Duleep Singh's commander-in-chief and subordinate army commander and fervent supporters are well documented in W. G. Archer, Paintings of the Sikhs, London 1966, pp. 66, 173, and fig. 61. Dina Nath and Nur ud-Din, also sitters in the original, aren't seen on our exemple. Also, portraits of the young maharaja holding a rifle are not uncommon. One exemple probably painted by Imam Bakhsh circa 1840 is kept at the Musée National de Arts Asiatiques - Guimet (39750) and published in Stronge, S. (ed.), The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, London 1999.
