Description

TO BE SOLD WITH NO RESERVE

A large silver inlaid brass open work model of a bird,
Modern, 21st century,

In a revival style, an aquamanile, its chest with a large roundel inhabited by a lamassu and bordered by an inscription in bold kufic script, its neck and wings with further inscriptions, its head with an hinged drop shaped lid,

24.5cm. high and 30cm. long

Felines and birds were amply depicted across the Islamic world. Incense burners in their forms are kept in various institution such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (49.60.1, 1972.87, 51.56 and 37.47). Whilst the front of our example and the lay out of its decoration finds a direct comparison with the example kept at the State Hermitage Museum (ИР-2324) its stature and proportions recall a cast and inlaid aquamanile in the form of an eagle, also kept there, and inscribed in plain Kufic script  "In the name of Allah the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving. Blessings [from] Allah. This was made by Suleiman in the city of ... [?]. In the year one hundred and eighty." (State Hermitage Museum ИР-1567).
