Lot 100
Description
An Iznik-style pottery jug,
Cantagalli, Italy, 19th century,
On short foot, the rounded body rising to a flaring neck and straight lip, the polychrome decoration consisting of rising carnations and blue tulips, the serpentine handle hatched in black, cockerel mark to base in blue,
26.5cm. high
Provenance: Private London Collection
Founded by Ulisse Cantagalli and Giuseppe Cantagalli in florence, the Cantagalli 'Iznik-style' ceramics can be identified by their signature cockerel marker on the base of the vessels. This unique signature and the non Iznik typical size and form of many Cantagalli vessels reveals that the Italian producers did not seek simply to create Iznik reproductions (Walter B. Denny, Iznik : the Artistry of the Ottoman Ceramics, London, 2004, p.222).
Lot Footnotes
On this work one sees how Ulisse Cantagalli, like other late 19th century European ceramicists such as Samson, and others, were extremely successful in replicating the Iznik forms and floral repertoire.
