Lot 280

Description

Henry Thomas Bosdet,
British 1856-1934-

Standing male nude seen from behind;

pencil and charcoal on paper, signed, dated, and partially indistinctly inscribed 'April 14 1894 / H. Woods Esq R.A. (visitor[?]) / 11 sittings[?] / H.T. Bosdet' (lower right), 74.5 x 52.5 cm.

Provenance:
with Pyms Gallery [no.H525] (as 'John Young Hunter').
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Bosdet was a sculptor, illustrator, and painter who was best-known for his stained glass designs, and through his association with Pre-Raphaelite artists, particularly John Everett Millais (1829-1896). Bosdet was appointed Curator of the Life School at the Royal Academy in 1883, and it is likely in this capacity that the artist produced the present life study.
