Lot 490
Description
George Condo,
American b.1957 -
Extended Form, 2003;
polished golden bronze, from an edition of 3, signed with initials, dated and numbered 'GC 1/3 2003' and stamped with Polich Tallix Foundry Mark, H260 x W167 x D37 cm
Exhibited:
Long Museum, West Bund, Shanghai, 'George Condo: The Picture Gallery', 26th September-28th November 2021 (another cast, illustrated here)
Note:
the first gilded bronze works from Condo emerged in 2002 with small busts. Reminiscent of the modern smooth curves of a Brancusi or Jean Arp sculpture, the present lot may be atypical of Condo's work, but the dramaticism is distinctly his. Taking inspiration from artists including Pablo Picasso, Diego Velázquez, Henri Matisse, and Cy Twombly, it contorts and exaggerates their signature styles.
He famously started his art career as Andy Warhol's studio assistant.
