Lot 471

Description

Sir Antony Gormley OBE
British b.1950 -

Set of four Peckham bollards (Peg, Oval, Penis, Snowman), conceived 2001;

naturalised cast iron, designed in 2001, cast by Hargreaves Foundry, each bearing foundry mark and artist's initials 'AG' to the foot, each H100 x W43 x D43 cm above ground, plus 30 cm supporting foot (4)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Portugal, purchased from the Hargreaves Foundry in 2002

Note:
these bollards were designed by the sculptor Antony Gormley as part of the £60 million Peckham regeneration project begun in 1994. The artist was commissioned to design bollards, lamp posts and other elements of street furniture to decorate the south London neighbourhood. The first set of bollards were installed in Bellenden Road, where Gormley has his studio, but the design caused controversy and the local council subsequently withdrew funding. Local traders intervened and raised the funds to continue installation. They remain a distinctive feature of the Peckham area to this day.

The ferrous cast iron is intended to weather naturally over time and has incredible durability and longevity. The geometric designs work equally well as practical street furniture and as outdoor sculpture, and their height means they do not require planning permission to install.
