Notes:
Paco Rabanne undoubtedly revolutionised twentieth-century fashion by rejecting tradition tailoring in favour of construction, engineering and radical materiality. Paco Rabanne was the son of Balenciaga's head seamstress, trained in architecture, Rabanne approached dressmaking as a form of wearable structure, more famously incooperated in his pioneering 'armour' dresses of the 1960s. Assembled from metal discs, plates or geometric modules linked by rings or wire, these garments were not sewn but buily, challending the very definition of clothing.
Introduced at a time of cultural and technological upheaval, Rabanne's armour dresses embodied the spirit of the futurism. The reflective surfaces and sculptural silhouettes transformed the body into a modernist object, simultaneously protected and exposed, powerful rather than ornamental. The armour dress has since become one of the most iconic symbols of avant-garde fashion, worn by cultural figures, debutted in major production and preserved in major museum collection internationally. It stands as a manifesto of Rabanne's belief that fashion could be radical, intellectural and continues to influence designers decades later.
Born Hélène Delangle, Hélène Delangle became closely associated with the House of Rochas following her marriage to couturier Marcel Rochas in 1942, exerting a profound influence on the maison’s post-war aesthetic through her preference for fluid silhouettes, bare shoulders and an effortless approach to femininity. More than a muse, she was an active collaborator and cultural figure, immortalised in iconic photographs by Irving Penn and Richard Avedon that helped define a new ideal of chic. Moving within Paris’s artistic and intellectual circles, her influence extended beyond fashion into fragrance, most notably shaping the spirit of Femme (1944), one of the most celebrated perfumes of the twentieth century, conceived as an olfactory portrait of her personality.
Paco Rabanne’s relationship with the House of Rochas was formative to his radical approach to fashion. In the early 1960s, Rabanne worked for Rochas as a jewellery and accessories designer, creating avant-garde pieces that already hinted at his fascination with unconventional materials and construction. Under the direction of Hélène Rochas, the maison was unusually open to modernity and experimentation, providing Rabanne with a rare platform within an established couture house to push against traditional notions of elegance. This period proved crucial in shaping his design philosophy, bridging the refined Parisian sophistication of Rochas with Rabanne’s emerging vision of fashion as structure, provocation and modern art. The dialogue between the two reflects a pivotal moment in post-war French fashion, where heritage couture and radical futurism briefly intersected before Rabanne launched his own house in 1966.
