50.2 cm high (2)

Provenance
Christies, London, 'Style and Spirit' sale, 26th March 2013, Lot 216

Literature
Paul Atterbury & Louise Irvine, 'The Doulton Story', Souvenir booklet produced for the V&A, 1979, for similar example see page p.30

Footnote
The current lot includes two extraordinary post finials, created by Bayes in the 1930s. Part of a larger series, these rare survivals were commissioned by the St Pancras Housing Improvement Society. The society set out to regenerate the area of Somers Town, a notoriously poor area of London, replacing slum housing with affordable low rise flats. As part of the re-development, Gilbert Bayes' finial designs were used to adorn communal court yards and washing line posts, with larger examples used as garden ornaments, bringing elements of high end design into everyday living.

Overall general surface wear throughout consistent with age to include light scratches and scuffs. Both birds with visible craquelure to glaze throughout, more visible on blue glazed example. There is a small chip to one corner of blue bird base that appears to have a filled restoration. The drip glazed example has a small area to base where glaze has pooled and dried and been broken off, most likely at point of manufacture.
