Description
Geoffrey Holder,
Trinidadian 1930-2014 -
Reclining Figure (with 'Portrait of a woman' on the reverse), 1949;
oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 'G.Holder 49', 51 x 62.5 cm
Provenance:
Private Collection, purchased in Trinidad in 1949 whilst working for the British Council and thence by descent
Note:
Completed when he was only 19, Geoffrey likely took cues from his older brother, Boscoe Holder (1921–2007) who was also a painter and polymath. The bright colours in the work reflect the Caribbean landscape around him.
Holder achieved great success in across many fields; he was a painter, photographer, choreographer, director, costume designer, dancer, actor and composer. Whilst best known in the theatre industry, winning two Tony Awards, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design in a Musical for the original Broadway production of 'The Wiz', he also was the villain in the James Bond film 'Live and Let Die' from 1973.
Throughout his career, he continued to paint, a background source of inspiration and creative output. He moved from Trinidad to New York in 1953, and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his art in 1956. His and his brother's work has recently been the subject of exhibitions at James Fuentes Gallery, New York and Victoria Miro Gallery, London.
