Description
A large Chinese blue and white 'hundred boys at play' baluster jar
Qing dynasty, Kangxi period
The thickly potted vessel boldly painted in washes of cobalt blue with a continuous, riotous scene of a multitude of boys at play on a luxuriant fenced garden, the boys engaged in a variety of activities including riding a hobby horse, dancing, and the 'four arts' of painting, poetry, playing weiqi and playing music, the base with a beribboned lozenge within a double circle, 31.8cm high. (Import VAT Charged on the Hammer Price)
Provenance: a Dutch private collection.
Illustrated: Feng-Chun Ma, A Thousand Years of a Hundred Boys in Chinese Art, CA Book Publishing, Hong Kong, 2024, p. 106-107, no. 20.

The present vase is emblematic of the ambition inherent within the theme of the 'hundred boys at play': if the boys are to become successful in their civil service career, they have to be well-prepared and become well-versed in the 'four accomplishments' of playing the qin, and of appreciating and practicing poetry, painting and literature, which is thus to imbue even their playtime.
