Lot 253

Description

Madge Gill
British 1882-1961 -

Untitled, 1942

ink on a postcard, signed and dated on the reverse 'Myrinerest February 2nd 1942', 9 x 14 cm (ARR)

Note:
Gill often signed her drawings not with her own name, but with that of her spirit guide, "Myrninerest", whom she first encountered in 1920. This was part of her mediumistic artistic practice, where she believed the works were created under the control of this ethereal presence.

Madge Gill was included in the Venice Biennale for the first time in 2024 in the exhibition 'Foreigners Everywhere' with a large scale mural on loan from the collection of Newham Archives, London. The Tate acquired her work for their permanent collection after its exhibition at Frieze Masters, London last month.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
