British 1890-1957 -

Sappers under Hill 60, 1918-19;

pen and brush and black ink over pencil on paper, 20 x 26.4 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
with Fischer Fine Art Ltd. London, K 11,566 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
with Rex Irwin Art Dealer, Sydney (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
with L.A. Louver, Inc., Venice CA (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
with Gillian Jason Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
Bonhams, London, Modern Pictures and Sculpture, 15th October 2002, lot 41;
Private Collection

Exhibited:
Fischer Fine Art Ltd. London, 'A Tribute to Lilian Bomberg', March-April 1985, cat. no.11 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame)

Note:
this is one of a series of studies Bomberg made for his commission for the Canadian War Memorial Funds following WWI. Bomberg decided to depict the moment when Canadian soldiers dug under the German trenches to lay explosive for a surprise assault during Ypres. The final painting, '
Sappers at Work: A Canadian Tunnelling Company, 1919', is a brilliant fusion of realism and the geometric, vorticist style of Bomberg's early work, developed alongside Wyndham Lewis, and is now in the National Gallery of Canada. Similar studies to the present work are now in the collection of Ben Uri Gallery and the Imperial War Museum.
