Description
Augustus John OM RA,
British 1878-1961 -
Vivien John posing nude in a landscape, late 1930s;
oil on canvas, signed lower right 'John', 60 x 50.8 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
Jeffrey Judelson (1942-2023) and thence by descent
Note:
Augustus John made a series of paintings of his daughter, the painter Vivien John (1914-1994), in an arcadian setting from the mid-1920s, one of which was exhibited at the Fine Art Society as part of the collection of her half-sister, Amaryllis Fleming. Vivien John was the daughter of Dorelia McNeill, a pivotal figure in both Augustus and his sister Gwen John's lives, and who featured in many of his most iconic and bohemian images.
Vivien's pose and the natural setting recall some of John's earliest works, perhaps inspired by Biblical themes of Eden, now in the National Museum of Cardiff 'Study of Two Nudes, c.1906' and 'Female Nude, c.1900'. In this work, John has created an image of pose and self-confidence, the figure at one with the landscape that surrounds it.
