Note:
'Rural Rides' was first published in the 1820s and describes political reformer William Cobbett's 'actual observations of rural conditions'. Nash had a keen interest in nature and botany, and the English countryside was a frequent subject in his work, so it is apt that in the 1930s he created illustrations for a new edition of the book.
Alongside his brother and renowned artist Paul Nash, John Nash was commissioned as an official war artist in WWI. He was also a close contemporary of artists such as Eric Ravilious, Cedric Morris, Dora Carrington and Edward Bawden. Other works on this theme are in public collections including The Courtauld, Tate Britain and the Imperial War Museum in London, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Major retrospectives of Nash's work were held at the Royal Academy, London in 1967 and the Towner Eastbourne in 2021.
