Note:
The Mid-Day Studios was a vital cultural centre in Post-War Manchester which ran until 1951 and gave L. S. Lowry his first exhibition in 1948. The gallery is depicted in Lowry's 'The Mid-Day Studios' now in the collection of Manchester Art Gallery. A number of similar still life compositions by Wolfe, including 'Zinnias' and 'Sunflowers', are now in the same collection, likely purchased from the gallery.
Edward Wolfe was invited by Nina Hamnett to work with Roger Fry's Omega Workshop during the latter stages of the First World War and worked with Duncan Grant to decorate the dividing doors in the first floor sitting room at 46 Gordon Square when Maynard Keynes had control of the house. He became closely associated with the Bloomsbury Group and his works are now in all major UK museums including Manchester Art Gallery, the National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate.
