Lot 304

Description

Terry O'Neill CBE,
British 1938- 2019,

Brigitte Bardot in Spain, 1971;

silver gelatin print, printed later,
sheet: 178 x 140 cm, signed in black pen and numbered 29/50
(framed)
(ARR)

This is the second biggest print of this subject seen at auction or elsewhere, it has a striking presence as a result.

Note: Terry O'Neill was a British photographer who, since the early 1960s, had documented the great legends of pop. His list of subjects includes The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, aswell as the British Royal family, Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot and Orson Welles, among others. He was married to Faye Dunaway, the famous actress for five years.
In the 1960s, O'Neill used the then still novel 35mm film camera that offered a distinctly candid and more casual approach to photography. With the 35mm, O'Neill was able to create photographs discreetly, and yet spontaneously, with less distance between him and his subjects. This photo of Bardot is perhaps one of his most famous and its rare to see an example on this scale.
