Lot 93

Description

Janet Leach (1918-1997)

Monumental bottle vase, 1986
Stoneware with layered and dripped green and brown Hamstone glazes
Partially flooded JL and Leach Pottery seals
44cm high, approximately 40cm wide
(ARR)

Provenance
Exhibited, The British Craft Centre, November 1986

Note
Together with a letter from the artist describing the manufacture of this pot - 'May 28, 1986. This pot was made in the autumn of 1986. It was the largest in my exhibition at the British Craft Centre in November 86. The glaze is made from a Somerset limestone known as Ham Stone - a traditional building stone of the Dorset, Somerset area. Thank you for liking it. Sincerely, Janet Leach, Leach Pottery, St. Ives'

Please note: Restoration reputedly completed before the 1986 British Craft Centre exhibition and not subsequently.

Repair to the base of the vase, most visible from the interior – repair runs slightly up the side of the vase, restoration visible as a pink paste like substance pasted over the affected areas. Repair to the rim. The paste to the rim is a reddish brown colour which glows blue under UV. Small scuff to waist of vase.

These appear to be old restorations. There is a slight groove running up the side where the paste is, suggesting that the lower side of the body perhaps buckled slightly and split during firing.

Despite restoration, the pot presents extremely well, with only a small portion of the restoration visible to the side and the rim.
