Lot 464
Description
Mary Lightbody Gow, RI,
British 1851-1929-
Little Miss Shy;
pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'M.L. GOW. 97' (lower left), 31.2 x 16.8 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent).
Note:
Mary Gow studied at Heatherley's School, and went on to exhibit her work widely, including at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy, as well as at the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. She was the sister of the history painter Andrew Carrick Gow (1848-1920), and wife of Sydney Prior Hall (1842-1922).
The present work is a characteristic example of Gow's charming, softly-painted watercolours, generally depicting domestic scenes of women and children in richly-decorated interiors. Two similar works by Gow sold at Christie's, London, 16 November 2006, lots 196 and 197 (£5,040 each). A large watercolour of 'The Gow Brothers' sold earlier this year at Christie's, London, 2 June 2025 for £39,060.
