Description
George Spencer Watson, RA ROI,
British 1869-1934-
Portrait study of a boy, bust length;
sanguine chalk on paper, signed with initials and dated 'GSW / April 1913' (lower right), 43.6 x 32.6 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Spencer Watson studied at the Royal Academy Schools, winning silver medals in 1889 and 1891, and was awarded the Landseer Scholarship in 1892. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1891, and enjoyed considerable success as a portraitist over the course of his career. The present work is a characteristic example of the sensitive and delicately-handled portrait studies which Watson produced, with similar works including his drawing of the artist Fred Roe in the collection of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery [BORGM:2018.48].
