Description
Robert Henri,
American 1865-1929-
Studies of a reclining female nude;
pen and black ink on paper, double-sided, signed 'Robert Henri' (verso), 20.3 x 41.6 cm. (recto), 27.8 x 35.4 cm. (verso)
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Henri studied under Thomas Anschutz (1851-1912) and Thomas Hovenden (1841-1895) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, before travelling to Paris in 1888, where he was taught by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) at the Académie Julian. He is best-known as one of the central proponents of the Ash Can School of realist painting in America.
The present work is a characteristic example of Henri's loosely-sketched figure studies which are imbued with a sense of spontaneity, conveying a strong sense of the sitter's presence. A similar work by Henri includes his study of a standing figure which sold at Freeman's-Hindman, Pennsylvania, on 28 February 2024, lot 213 (£1,403).
