Lot 444

Description

Louis Hubbard Grimshaw,
British 1870-1944-

View of Briggate, Leeds at Night;

oil on board, signed 'Louis Grimshaw' (lower left), signed, inscribed and dated 'Briggate, Leeds. / Louis Grimshaw / 1903' on the reverse, 30.5 x 46 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie’s, London, 12 June 2001, lot 56 (£49,350).
with Richard Green, London [SP 2968];
where purchased by Baron Stanley Kalms (1931-2025) in 2001;
Thence by descent.

Note:
This view looks down Briggate, across the junction with Boar Lane and down to the railway viaduct across the lower Briggate.

The Christie's 2001 catalogue notes: 'Son of Atkinson Grimshaw, Louis H Grimshaw inherited his father's artistic talent whilst his brother Arthur followed a musical career becoming organist at St. Anne's Cathedral, Leeds. Louis Grimshaw was the most successful of his father's followers, and assisted him towards the end of his life. After his death, Louis continued the tradition of moonlit cityscapes painting subjects from Leeds, Liverpool and Edinburgh. The superior quality of Louis's work over the artists who painted in the Atkinson Grimshaw style, such as Wilfred Jenkins and Harry Meegan, often makes his pictures difficult to distinguish from those by his father. In 1906 he stopped painting so that he could pursue a career as a cartographer on the Manchester Guardian. As a result his work is quite rare and does not appear on the market often. We are grateful to Alexander Robertson, Curator, Leeds City Art Gallery for his help in the preparation of this catalogue entry.'
