Lot 412
Description
Maurice Lévis,
French 1860-1940-
On the Loire;
oil on canvas, signed 'Maurice Lévis' (lower right), bears partially obscured inscription which reads 'Morning in the Valley - by ... / 11 boulevard de clichy' to the upper stretcher bar, bears further partially obscured inscription which reads '1913' to the lower stretcher bar, 50.5 x 73.5 cm.
Provenance:
with The Colleton House Gallery, Tetbury.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Lévis studied under Henri Harpignies (1819-1916), Jules Lefebvre (1836-1911), and Pierre Billet (1837-1922), with his light, airy landscapes exhibiting a particularly strong debt to Harpignies' approach. The present riverside scene is characteristic of Lévis's output, with the outlines of a ruin on a hilltop almost gesturing towards the expansive Classical landscapes of earlier generations of French painters such as Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). Similar works by Lévis include his painting which appeared at Sotheby's, New York, on 5 February 2025, lot 191, and that which depicts the same ruins on a hilltop, which sold at Schloss Ahlden Auctions, Germany, on 7 May 2023, lot 1821 (€1,100 hammer).
